Deuteronomy 34:1–4

“And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo… And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob… I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.”

Mount Nebo is one of the most bittersweet places in Scripture.

For forty years, Moses had led the people of Israel through the wilderness.

He had stood before Pharaoh.

He had witnessed the plagues.

He had parted the Red Sea.

He had received the Law on Sinai.

He had endured criticism, rebellion, and countless challenges.

Now, at the end of his life, God brought him to Mount Nebo.

From that mountain, Moses could see the Promised Land.

Every valley.

Every hill.

Every promise that God had made.

He could see it.

But he would not enter it.

At first glance, that seems very sad.

Yet Scripture never portrays Moses as a defeated man.

In fact, Mount Nebo teaches one of the most important lessons in the Christian life:

Success is not measured by how much we accomplish.

Success is measured by faithfulness to God.

Moses did not get everything he wanted.

But he fulfilled the purpose God had given him.

Sometimes we imagine that finishing well means accomplishing every goal.

Not necessarily.

Finishing well means remaining faithful until the end.

Many people start strong.

Few finish strong.

Some begin with enthusiasm but grow weary.

Some begin with conviction but drift away.

Some begin with faith but become distracted.

Moses reminds us that a life of faithfulness is never wasted.

At Nebo, Moses saw the fulfillment of God’s promises from a distance.

Today, believers live with a similar hope.

There are promises we have not yet seen fulfilled.

There are prayers not yet answered.

There are hopes that remain future.

But one day we will stand in the presence of Christ and discover that every promise of God was true.

The goal is not merely to start the race.

The goal is to finish it.

And by God’s grace, to finish it well..
